Inception is a 2010 American science fiction film written, co-produced, and directed by Christopher Nolan. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as the protagonist Dom Cobb—a thief who enters the dreams of others to obtain information that is otherwise inaccessible. Dom Cobb is a former corporate spy who uses his ability to enter people's dreams as part of an extraction business with his partner Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). Cobb has been having difficulty adjusting to life after stealing information from another person's dream, but he accepts one last job offered by Saito (Ken Watanabe) which requires him to plant an idea in someone's mind. Cobb recruits another thief named Yusuf (Dileep Rao), his son Dakotra (Natasha Braier) and Nina Garcia (Ellen Page) to help him. They are able to enter the mind of businessman Eames (Tom Hardy) who is dreaming of being on an airplane with his wife Mal (Marion Cotillard). Eames explains that he has been forced to give up on dreamsharing after it became impossible for him to return home from a business trip, due to government agents surrounding the plane. He offers them jobs extracted by sharing dreams but they are unable to complete them due to their lack of experience and knowledge. Eames introduces them to Ariadne, a dreamsharing expert who teaches them to place their ideas into people's dreams when they are asleep. They are unable to enter the mind of Yusuf's former business partner Yusuf Malik, who has been in jail for three years after being framed for terrorism by Saito. Cobb determines that Eames is trying to destroy his own business by selling out his rival Arthur. Cobb wishes to stop him but cannot enter the CEO's mind without Saito's help, because he is able to detect when someone has tried to access their own subconscious. Once inside the CEO's dream, Cobb and Ariadne create an impossible maze for him to stand in and arrive at a safe haven. They bottle up their ideas so Eames cannot replicate them and convince Saito to invest in Cobb's new extraction business. Cobb recruits several people from his old team, including Eames. Cobbs, Eames, Arthur, Saito, Ariadne and Saito prepare to enter the mind of Robert Fischer Jr., the heir to the fictional "Yusuf corporation". Fischer is obsessed with retrieving his father's safe deposit box key from his own subconscious buried deep within a series of dream levels based on Fischer's perceptions of Paris. The team creates an extensive pre-stage. However, Saito and Arthur betray them and stage a counterattack of their own, kidnapping Fischer and his wife Mal. Saito allows Cobb to enter Fischer's mind but still keeps ownership of him. He aims to use Fischer's dreams against him in his war with Arthur, using the sleeper agent Finch (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) to turn Fischer into a sleeper agent which Saito can then manipulate into stealing the keys from the dream levels.
